Moth/Bang/Klee Families genealogy
The von Moth family in
In order to establish the credibility of the story it is necessary for me to list a lot of genealogical details that were painstakingly assembled by Bang and Klee family members in Denmark. I advise readers to first enjoy the story and try to avoid getting bogged down in the details. You can study them later if you like. You will not be required to take an exam, so have fun learning about all these interesting people to whom we are either closely or distantly related.
You can find much additional information about some of our famous Bang and Klee ancestors on other sections of this website.

Highlights of the Moth family history
Doctor Poul
v. Moths youngest child,
Sophie Amalie Moth was "Married to the left hand" of King
Christian V
164699 of Denmark and Norway at age 16. She had 5 children by him.
Sophie Amalie was appointed countess of Sams๘e in
1677 Her children and their descendants achieved Nobility status. Her Great Great
etc. Grandson was Constantine II,
King of Greece from 1964 until the abolition of
the monarchy in 1974.
We are
descended from Poul Moth through Sophies older sister
Beate Ingeborg Moth 1646-97,
not through Sophie. But family members may find it amusing to know that we are
distant relatives of many members of European Royalty, past and present. How did
that happen? As a result of having five children by King Christian V, Sophie
launched the Royal line of the Moth family. Some of her descendants intermarried
with European Royalty. Since Sophie's descendants are also descendants of her
father, Poul Moth, that means we Klees and Bangs are distantly related to
numerous European royalty, past and present: that includes Tsar
There has been so much intermarriage amongst European Royalty over the centuries that one can almost say that if you're related to one, you're related to most of the Royal Houses. The evidence I have found indicates that all the royalty mentioned below are related to us to a small degree. Read on and decide for yourself whether to believe this amazing story.
Over the centuries,
the British Royal
families have had several infusions of Danish blood by marriage.
Anne
of Denmark (1574
1619)
was queen
consort of King
James I of England- . Her second son became King
Charles I, whose reign ended with his beheading in 1649 during the civil
war.
Queen Anne of Great Britain and Ireland (1665-1714)married Prince George of Denmark, brother of the Danish King Christian V; The Klees and Bangs are distant relatives of Christian V, and his successors, as I will explain some paragraphs further on.
Edward VII (18411910), the eldest son of Queen Victoria, married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863. When Edward was crowned in 1901, she became Queen Alexandra of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as Empress of India. Alexandra's sister, Princess Dagmar(18471928) became the wife of Tsar Alexander III. The reign of her son, Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) ended abruptly with the Russian Revolution and his execution by the Bolsheviks. Ouch!
Today's British Queen, Elizabeth II is a great granddaughter of Alexandra of Denmark.
Now for the the nitty-gritty details of our descent from
the Moth family
Abstract:
The Bang and Klee families are both linked to the von Moth family since the mid nineteenth century when Jakob Henrik Bang and Frederik A. G. Klee married the Moth sisters. The Bang link to the Moths became even stronger when, in the following generation, Jacobs son Bernhard Laurits Bang married Frederiks daughter Anna Elisabeth, Elise Klee.
The genealogy is hard to follow without a family tree. This website contains family trees for most of our ancestral lines, but the Moth connection is a new addition. When I have time I will add a family tree to enable readers to visualize the links between the Moths, Bangs and Klees, over a number of generations. I hope that the following summary will suffice until that part of the family tree is ready. Please excuse the redundancy. I repeated some of the most relevant facts in several places.
Only those in the direct line of descent are listed.
Matthias Moth 1567- est. 1647 doctor of the emperor in Vienna and the father of Poul Moth (1600-1670); Poul Moth/Ida Dorothea Bureneus; Beate Ingeborg Moth 1646-97)/ Jens Andersen Hals; Son Poul Hals Moth/Wife name unknown; Frederik Christian Moth 1730-1808/Names of Wife & children unknown; Grandson- Major Frederik Christian Patrick Moth 1791-1851; Two daughters known; Laura Louise Josephine v. Moth/Jakob Henrik Bang-- and Caroline Frederikke Sophie Nicoline Moth 1812-84/Frederik Alexander Gottlieb Klee 1808-1864-
If you think you are confused after reading this summary, wait and see how confused you will be after reading the details. If you want to skip the rest of the nitty gritty, you can take my word for it that the details come from Denmark and Danes (especially our relatives) keep excellent records. Some of my general information came from the Internet. Every piece of information I obtained from the Internet, I checked against other, independent sources. gdklee

Our connections with the von Moth family have never been spelled out as clearly and explicitly as have those with the prominent Fabritius family-see Table 1A (Fabritius) on the Index page. Both families were strongly connected to the Royal Court of Denmark during the 17th century and afterward. I will list what we know about the Moth genealogy and where it intersects with the Bangs and Klees during the 19th century. My basic documentation on this subject was provided by Ida Klee and Joergen Bang, both of whom live in Denmark.
In case any grandkids are reading this, in Danish the name Moth is pronounced MOTE and it has nothing to do with the flying insects called moths in English.) Webmaster, Gerald D Klee
The Moths are an important part of the family history. What is the evidence for this claim?
Frederik Alexander Klee (1808-1856) was married to Caroline *Sophie Marie Frederikke Nicoline v. Moth Klee.

have been looking into my fathers papers again to sort out the ancestors from
the Moth family.

In

1.
Rudolph Moth 1642-75
2.
Matthias Moth 1649-1719
3.
Ida Christine Moth 1644-89 married to Bishop S๘ren Glud
4.
Beate Ingeborg Moth 1646-97 1. marriage rural dean (Provst) (head of the
priest of his church) Jens Andersen Hals, died. 1675(this is the two ancestors
where the Klee family comes from), 2. marriage Kancelliraad Frederik
Mecklenburg died 1689 and 3rd marriage Judge Holger Parsberg died 1692.
5.
Sophie Amalie Moth 1654-1719, in 1677 she got patent of being countess of
Sams๘e and her sons were Counts of Danneschiold Sams๘e
Going back to number, 4, Beate Ingeborg Moth, she and Jens Andersen Hals gave birth to Poul Hals Moth, and in 1698 he was taken into the nobility with the name Moth. (There are no specific years for him in the papers.)
Poul Hals Moth son, Frederik Christian Moth 1694-1746, was Governor in the West Indies.
His son was "public trustee" on St. Croix, Chamberlain Frederik Christian Moth 1730-1808. He was the grandfather of
Major Frederik
Christian Patrick Moth 1791-1851. One of his children was Caroline Frederikke
Sophie Nicoline moth (1812-84) She was married to Counselor of Justice Frederik
Alexander Gottlieb Klee 1808-1864; Caroline's sister,
Anna Elizabeth Caroline Klee, (1844-1922), the daughter of Caroline v Moth Klee, married Doctor Bernhard Laurits Bang (1848-1932), the son of Laura L J Moth Bang.
Thus, all subsequent generations of Bangs and Klees in this line are partly descended from the von Moth family.
